The Corners Project asks friends, family, and other participants to share photographs of the corners that inhabit their lives. I crop their photos into hexagonal tiles/cubes, and use those tiles/cubes to build virtual objects and environments.

First I ask each participant to share a photo of a corner representing their lives. Many recently shared photos represent lives lived in isolation/social distancing, but that is not a prerequisite. Participants are each assigned a number, but I will not share their names if instructed not to. My main requirement for corner photos is that the angles comprising the corner are all 120º (but I will adjust photos to “fix” the angles if I can.) The photos are cropped into a hexagonal tile which doubles as an orthogonal view of a cube. These tiles/cubes can be imagined as either receding or protruding in three dimensional space.

The resulting tiles/cubes are then used to build a collaged image that represents virtual objects and/or environments. For each participant, I initially build a collage using their tile/cube exclusively, but each tile can also be used to build collages in concert with the tiles of other participants. I will always give participants photography credit if I use a tile based on their photograph in a collage. If your tile is used with other participants’ tiles in a collage, I will give equal billing to each photographer, regardless of the number of times a given tile is used in the collage.

Below is a gallery of participant’s tiles. They are labeled to reflect the participant number, the participant’s name (when possible,) and the date when I received their source photograph.
